The World’s First Foldable Smartphone Now Has a Successor

Foldable Smartphone Royole Flexpai 2

Not Samsung or Huawei, Royole is the first company to launch a foldable smartphone. Because it only circulated in China’s domestic market, its first devices were practically unknown outside mainland China.

This week the company introduced its second iteration, and now it comes with an improved hinge, a refined screen with a bigger and more beautiful diagonal, and a lower price, the Royole Flexpai 2.

The device launch is a follow-up to the March event, where company CEO Bill Liu introduced a new folding screen.

Previous specs leaked were Snapdragon 865, UFS3.0 storage, and LPDDR5 RAM. Now, the capacities are revealed which are 8 / 256GB and 12 / 512GB. Both are available for sale.

The display component is a big improvement for the Royole. The Flexpai 2 features a panel that folds outwards, becoming a dual-screen smartphone when the hinge is at 180 degrees.

The company calls the technology the Cicada Wing 3S and “smooth as a mirror”, it doesn’t have any folds even though it has been folded more than 1.8 million times.

In terms of specifications, the unfolded panel span is 7.8 inches with a 4: 3 ratio and 1440p resolution. When folded, the front becomes a 16: 9 5.5-inch screen, while the back is 5.4 inches with a 16:10 ratio.

Royole Flexpai 2 has a special interface, based on Android 10, called WaterOS 2.0 and it implements several multitasking features that will make this foldable phone a great device for working at home.

There are also four cameras on the left side. Topping up is the 16MP ultra-wide-angle shooter with a 116-degree FoV, followed by an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, then there’s a 64MP main sensor with f / 1.9 aperture, a 6P lens, and a 1 / 1.72 ″ sensor at the rear.

The fourth camera is a 32MP dedicated portrait lens for selfie shots. The camera application has a feature to take a picture of a person and the person can see himself on the second screen.

The phone supports 5G connectivity with all popular brands and works on SA and NSA networks, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and has a USB-C 3.1 port for a 4,450mAh battery with QC 4.0 fast-charging capability at 18W.

Royole Flexpai 2 is already available on the company website. It is offered in Silver, Black or Gold, and has two price tags: the 8 / 256GB variant is CNY9,988 (~ IDR 21.7 million) and the 12 / 512GB variant is CNY 11,588 or $ 1699
