End Of Yahoo Groups

Yahoo Groups, a free service from Yahoo for the general public to hold discussion forums in the form of a mailing list, will be closed on December 15, 2020, after 19 years of operating online.

Quoted from ZDNet, Tuesday (13/10) Verizon, which bought Yahoo in 2017, announced the ‘weight’ decision this week, via email sent to Yahoo Groups users and also messages posted on the Yahoo Groups website. “With a heavy heart, we have decided to close Yahoo Groups on December 15, 2020,” wrote Yahoo.

The End Of Yahoo Groups

“We have to make tough decisions about products that no longer fit our long-term strategy. Meanwhile, we are also sharpening our focus in other business areas,” continued Yahoo.

Not surprisingly, previously the service, which has been in existence since 2001, has suffered a downturn due to competition and is slowly starting to lose a large part of its formerly very large active user base.

It was also reported that Verizon was not able to bring about significant changes. Gradually, the decline in Yahoo users was getting heavier. Also, many users are known to be turning to premium or paid services instead of free services like Yahoo Groups.

Starting today after the announcement is given, Yahoo Groups users are now unable to create new groups. All that remains active in the email function, but this will also be discontinued after December 15, 2020. On that date, Verizon plans to close all Yahoo Groups infrastructure and end the early internet era.

Verizon also encourages all remaining Yahoo Groups members to organize and switch to message boards and meeting places before the email function starts shutting down.

In performance, Yahoo Group is like social media, bringing together or gathering people with the same interests to create a community in cyberspace via e-mail. As a mailing list, Yahoo Groups does not only function to spread information via email to several people quickly.

But Yahoo Groups also offers some interesting features, namely as a place to share photos, messages, and data, conduct polls, and record events in the Groups calendar.
